Food in Poovar
Speciality cuisine, a theme a night and local food is offered at Square Lagoon, a restaurant in this resort. Every day the menu has a dish which is Kerala special – like avial or puttu ot aapam which are served. Chicken curry and fish curry, primarily karimeen is prepared here with all the local spices and ingredients. Food in Kerala is simple, tasty and delicious. Coconuts and spices are generously used in cooking. Rice is the staple diet here and sea food, especially fresh catch from any water body – river or sea – is the most sought after. Pearl fish or Karimeen is fried and cooked in a spicy curry and then served either with rice or appam. If you’re a fan of biryani, do try Thalassery Biryani with its blend of Mughlai and Malabar influences. For the vegetarians, rice with avial and thoran or appam with stew or parotta with curry is a good bet. One of the most famous dishes in Kerala is the yogurt-based kaalan cooked with vegetables like raw banana and elephant yam. Preparations with traditional fruits and vegetables include jack fruit, yam, tapioca, and banana among others. You must also try Sadhya – the royal Keralite vegetarian feast prepared on the tenth day of Onam. It comprises 26 traditional dishes served on a banana leaf. Festivals in Poovar
Keralites value their traditions and culture. Celebrating festivals with friends and families is essential for them. Onam – the harvest festival of Kerala – is welcomed with zeal and splendour in the midst of August and September. Vishu, the Malayalam New Year, is celebrated by seeing auspicious stuffs like rice, vegetables, beetle leaves, flowers, coins, a mirror and the likes on waking up in the morning. Another astonishing festival of Poovar is Attukal Pongala – the festival that won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the only religious festival with the largest gathering of women. All the festivals of Kerala include fireworks, flowers, colours and loads of splendour. And we assure you that at our Poovar resort, you shall enjoy these events to the fullest. Another festival celebrated across the state is the Malayali New Year called Vishu which falls in April. It is also celebrated as the festival of lights. It is believed that it is auspicious to look at a medley of positive items the first thing in the morning that includes the Vishukkanni. The single largest gathering of women in the world happens once a year at Attukal Pongal Festival held in February every year. The legend of Kovalam and Kannaki is the main story behind the temple. The festival goes on for 10 days and Kannaki is worshipped as Parvati or Bhagavathy.
Places to Visit in Poovar
Spread across the Western Ghats, it is home to 39 species of mammals including tiger, elephant, leopard nilgiri tahr besides 176 species of birds. There is a crocodile farm set up here and is home to 20 mugger crocodiles. There is also a Elephant Rehabilitation Centre and one for deer as well. Located amidst the Western Ghats, Neyyar Dam is a gravity dam built on the river and is a picnic spot. Surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, lake, it is an idyllic getaway and a favourite among hikers. There is boating here as well. Kovalam with its many beaches – Lighthouse, Hawah and Samudra makes for a great destination from Poovar, If you want something more exclusive then visit Chowara beach and Azhimala Beach to explore the villages and temples around it. On the way to Kanyakumari from Tiruvananthapuram is the Padmanabhapuram palace, the old capital of the Travancore Maharaja before they shifted their capital to Tiruvanthapuram. One of the most beautiful and well preserved wooden palace, it is worth a visit. Most tourists plan a day trip from Tiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari to see the early morning sunrise. But if you are planning a longer trip, then the town itself has much to offer. There are several temples in and around the town. The Devi Kanyakumari temple, Naga temple at Nagercoil and another ancient temple at Suchindram. An ancient old at Vattakottai is another attraction. The capital of God’s own country is the portal to Poovar and is a tourist destination in itself with temples, museums, markets, cathedrals and art galleries thrown in besides beaches surrounding it. The Padmanabha temple is a must see here. Art enthusiasts head to Shree Chitra Art Gallery to see Ravi Varma paintings.
